Bumble CEO Whitney Wolfe Rejects Nearly Half Billion Dollar Buyout

Posted on September 4, 2017 By

Whitney Wolfe, CEO of avowedly feminist dating app Bumble, has rejected a $450 million dollar buyout from one of the largest players in the field. Match Group made the offer this past June, and there’s no doubt that Wolfe’s history with the company has had some influence on her decision. Once a co-founder of the popular dating app Tinder, she found herself stripped of her title after rebuking multiple counts of sexual harassment from another executive. She brought a suit against the company, and settled out of court.

Further, $450 million may be vastly undervaluing Bumble. At an increase of 50,000 users a day and an expected revenue of more than $150 million a year, Bumble is on track to become one of the most popular dating apps. The company credits this to their unique approach after heterosexual couple matches, they require the woman to make the first move. Photo verification and an aggressive harassment prevention program have combined to make Bumble one of the most welcoming dating apps for women.

Whitney Wolfe is no stranger to harassment, but she has focused that experience into making the situation better for everyone. With the backing of the CEO of Badoo social network, she has turned her idea for a woman-empowering dating app into an extremely successful and expanding tech empire. This continues a long history of entrepreneurial spirit, dating back to her time at Southern Methodist University. After the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, she sold bamboo tote bags to support clean up efforts, not to mention her success with Tinder before the schism.

Earning a spot on Business Insider’s list of ’30 Most Important Women Under 30 In Tech’, Whitney Wolfe has proven herself to be a catalyzing force in the dating app scene. The recent release of BumbleBFF, a friend finding app for women, and the upcoming release of business networking app BumbleBizz, will ensure that Bumble’s earning potential increases exponentially.

Whitney Wolfe’s rejection of Match Group’s bid is another blow to the old, misogynistic way of thinking, and will allow her to continue unabated in her increasingly successful push to change the way we look at matching apps.

Chris Burch And The Future’s Tech Driven Fashion Trends

Posted on August 29, 2017 By

Over the years, the fashion industry and the technological industry have seen great transformation. The two industries continue to grow together in a fascinating way. A look at the past and the present gives a clear picture of what the future holds.

In the 1970s, boom box was the source of excitement. That is because it enabled the user to listen to the favorite stations and tunes while moving around. The creation of a walkman in the 1990s brought a more personal music experience. Subsequently, the personal experience was taken to new heights by the purchase of the iPod. Therefore, technology grows and is accepted in line with what an individual considers fashionable.

Presently, the fusion of technology as well as fashion is happening. Fashion designers enjoy developing what delivers and the use of technology makes it possible. Such a use delivers a higher standard in functionality and innovation. Anouk Wipprecht notes that technology is like a place for experiment. An individual can dive deeper into technology with endless possibilities. Wipprecht is a Dutch designer that combines fashion and technology. She is well known for avant-garde designs.

Other advancements in fashion have utilized technology to provide protection. Anna Haupt alongside Terese Alstin built a system that one can wear around the neck, a cyclist’s airbag. It is a neckwear that has an airbag, which pops up to offer protection from impact. With the neckwear, cyclists have better visibility. Additionally, Kevin Cannon and Ashwin Rajan’s Frontline Gloves provide greater protection to firefighters. The gloves allow firefighters to communicate important information through hand gestures. Interestingly, designers like SegraSegra and Emma Whiteside are creating fabulous fashions by recycling materials. Soleada Martin is in the forefront of using fashion and technology to create energy.

Technology and fashion complement each other in many ways. In some cases, technology needs the help of fashion to be popular. For instance, as a trend, Google Glass was made popular when Diane Von Furstenberg’s models wore them while on the catwalk. For this reason, technology and fashion can help one another and grow together.

How Invaluable Securus Technologies is Inside a Prison

Posted on July 27, 2017 By

When you want to gauge how valuable a company is, look how many lives it can help protect during the course of a single day. When the prison I work for installed a new call system for the inmates, it was not to make their lives any easier, it was to help make the lives of each person behind these prison walls a little safer. To get a better understanding as to how a call monitoring system does just that, we need to look at all the potential trouble we as officers face on a daily basis behind prison walls.

The inmates are inside this jail around the clock, while officers only work a fraction of that time. This not only gives the inmates an advantage, they can spot potential weakness in a second and take action. The inmates are constantly on the lookout for ways to get drugs, weapons, or cellphones into the jail. Drugs and weapons put inmates, officers, staff, and visitors in grave danger, while cellphones allow the inmates to do and say things without us being able to watch. When Securus Technologies installed our call monitoring system, everything changed.

Securus Technologies has their call monitoring systems in well over two-thousand prison systems, helping to maintain order for each facility. The company CEO, Rick Smith, says his employees are committed to a single goal, making this world safe. Once we learned how to use the LBS software, we were now in a position to hear inmates talking about smuggling phones into the visitor center, hiding drugs somewhere inside the prison, and inmates putting weapons in the yard to use to ambush others. The monitoring system has become an invaluable resource we now rely on to help us stay ahead of potential trouble before it become a life or death situation.

Karl Heideck: Why Courts Won’t Abolish Philadelphia’s Salary History Law

Posted on July 20, 2017 By

Karl Heideck

Karl Heideck

In the early months of 2017, many Philadelphia pro-workers’ advocates gained a newfound gratitude to the city’s renowned brotherly love. Mayor Jim Kenney had appended his signature to a new law, which prohibits owners of private businesses from inquiring about job seeker’s salary history. As it is the case with many ordinances, the matter was taken to court even before the new law was effected.

The Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia moved to court seeking to have the new law abolished. This move has raised questions as to whether the new law will be eventually effected. Entrepreneur Karl Heideck points out that in as much as employee lobby groups face an uphill task, the court may not halt the implementation of this historic ordinance. The implementation of the law will be beneficial in many ways and therefore, everything needs to be done to ensure that the lawsuit is dismissed.

Karl Heideck argues that under the new law, it will be illegal for employers to compel job seekers to provide information pertaining to their salary history. However, nothing stops HR teams from garnering their own data via publicly available database such as job listings. He adds that there are many employers who believe in the principle of wage equality. Such employers will likely support the implementation of the new law. As it is, the main challenge is the implementation of effective compliance practices pertaining to hiring and governance.

Brief Notes about Karl Heideck

Karl is regarded as one of the most notable and accomplished legal practitioners in Philadelphia. His remarkable career in the legal field spans more than 10 years. He mainly specializes in risk management, commercial litigation, and compliance issues. Karl graduated top of his class at Temple University James Beasley School of Law. Prior to that, he was a student at Swarthmore College where he graduated with a B.A (English and Literature) Degree.

Karl is currently an associate at Grant & Eisenhower PA, which is one of the largest law firms in Philadelphia. He previously worked at Pepper Hamilton LLP. What stands out is his ability to offer judicial representation to clients, something that has enabled him to win hundreds of cases. Mr. Heideck is a member of the Hire Council.
